I’m possibly speaking too soon but i think Spring is finally here in the UK and the snow is on it’s way out of here. However, i thoroughly love the snow for Winter Landscape Photography and usually come away from Winter with at least one lonely tree shot. This was shot on a golf course in Suffolk where a sand bunker and the subtle gradient of land had filled with an immense snow drift. I was able to use that drift to force perspective slightly and give the foreground some slightly textured interest. I am particularly fond of the sweeping foreground curve that compliments the curved horizon.

Hi ISO! Hello Grain! is a new blog/project that showcases High ISO photography along with an abundance of grain. My love of grain, motion blur and also my nostalgia for film grain are a major inspiration for setting up the blog. Many different styles such as landscape photography, seascapes, abstract and also quite possibly some street photography will feature. Most, if not all shots will be digital and be ranging from high ISO’s of 3200, 6400 and higher.

As i progress within my own thoughts towards trying to strip down certain elements and ask myself a question ‘Is a focal point necessary?’ i thought i’d post a photograph that i am pleased with. I have used my Canon MKI 50mm F/1.8 at F/1.8 with a long exposure of 2 seconds. This minimal seascape has an overall daydream quailty, the image has been swallowed up by a soft dusk light and without a strong focal point the photo is soft, which adds to this daydream feel.

Taken at Felixstowe Ferry, Suffolk, UK.

I have recently been exploring the idea of Abstract Expressionism photography within my work. Currently i am creating a project which is built around the idea of abstracting colourful fragments of buildings and exploring minimalist compositions. Inspirations such as the likes of Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko play a heavy role within these projects. The photographs use a set photographic style of High ISO on a Canon 7D camera, ISO’s such as 6400 work really well for grain. This grain adds a textured feel and along with ICM (intentional camera movement) Photography the effect a more painterly look is achieved.

Abstract Expressionism photography has always been at the heart of my photography since i first started, abstraction was a first love and a great way of experimenting in my early days with photography.

Yachats, Oregon is a wonderful stretch of coastline to exercise seascape photography. It is packed with countless smooth and jagged rock formations that let the waves splash or flow randomly.

Caution is advised of course as those wonderful Pacific waves can be so unpredictable at times. The lack of clouds during this seascape photography shoot pushed me to wait fully until the sun had dropped behind a small bank of cloud on the horizon resulting in some very pleasing light.

Cape Kiwanda located in Pacific City, Oregon is an absolute gem for seascape photography, sandy cliffs, a large seastack named Haystack rock, huge waves and great views of the coastline. The small cape is easy to navigate around and offers an abundance of fantastic views at sunset of the Oregon coast. While in Oregon i was told i was lucky i had such great weather, sunny and blue skies. I prefer my skies to have cloud detail for photography and while staying in Pacific City i was greated by the best sunset of all my time staying on the Oregon Coast, here is one shot taken that evening.
